How to Prepare for Rhinoplasty Surgery: Tips for a Smooth Experience

Girl smiling and touching her nose after rhinoplasty Rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping surgery, is an exciting step toward achieving your desired look or improving nasal function. Proper preparation can aid in a smooth experience and optimal results. Here are some tips to help you get ready for your procedure.

Selecting a skilled and knowledgeable surgeon is one of the most important steps in your rhinoplasty journey. Dr. Ryan C. Frank, a Calgary-based plastic surgeon, combines his extensive training and a passion for improving patients’ lives, a legacy he proudly upholds following in his father’s footsteps. His expertise and dedication to personalized care can help you achieve your desired results.

Follow Your Surgeon’s Instructions

Your surgeon will give you a detailed pre-operative guide tailored to your needs. This may include avoiding certain medications, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, which can increase bleeding. Be sure to follow these instructions carefully.

Plan for Your Recovery

Rhinoplasty recovery typically requires one to two weeks of downtime. Arrange for time off work or school and set up a comfortable recovery space at home. Stock up on recovery essentials like gauze, ice packs, and prescribed medications.

Quit Smoking

If you smoke, you should quit at least two weeks before surgery and during recovery. Smoking impairs circulation and can delay healing, increasing the risk of complications.

Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine

In the week leading up to your surgery, limit or refrain from alcohol and caffeine consumption, as these beverages can dehydrate your body and hinder the healing process.

Prepare Mentally and Emotionally

It’s natural to feel a mix of excitement and nerves before surgery. Take time to educate yourself about the procedure and visualize positive outcomes. Practice mindfulness and try relaxation techniques to help ease any anxiety.

Arrange for Transportation and Assistance

Rhinoplasty is performed under anesthesia, so you won’t be able to drive yourself home. Arrange for a trusted person to transport you to and from surgery and stay with you for the first 24-48 hours.

Eat a Healthy Diet

A nutrient-rich diet with plenty of fruit, vegetables, and lean protein can boost your immune system and promote faster healing. Stay well hydrated, especially in the days leading up to surgery.

3 Ways a Nose Job Can Change Your Face

how a nose job can change your face Many people seek out a rhinoplasty or nose job when they want to alter the appearance of their nose to achieve facial balancing. However, what most people may not realize is that once facial balancing is achieved, the results from your rhinoplasty can affect more features on your face than just the nose.

Whether you subtly or drastically change the appearance of your nose, the change can still enhance other facial features, such as your eyes, mouth, cheeks, and forehead to appear more proportionate on your face. These three ways a rhinoplasty can change the appearance of your face for the better just may help you understand all the benefits of getting a nose job.

1. A rhinoplasty can bring attention away from the nose.

Many people who are interested in getting a rhinoplasty can feel like a lot of attention is often put on their nose rather than their overall face when looking or talking to people. By altering the appearance of the nose, most likely changing its shape to make it appear smaller or altering the nose bridge to make it less prominent, a subtle softness can be achieved on the face. This brings less attention to the nose and more attention to other facial features, such as the eyes.

2. A rhinoplasty can affect the appearance of your smile for the better.

While the rhinoplasty procedure will not alter the structural appearance of your smile, changes made to the tip of your nose can affect the appearance of your smile. If the tip of your nose looks as if it touches your upper lip when smiling, this can be altered to eliminate the appearance of touching, allowing the nose to look smaller and for the patient to have more of their upper lip visible, which can create a bigger, more noticeable smile.

3. A rhinoplasty can help you achieve facial balancing.

Most patients seeking drastic changes from a rhinoplasty often do so because of the size of their nose. Achieving a smaller nose allows the eyes, mouth, cheeks, and forehead all to look proportionally balanced to each other, achieving facial balancing and symmetry, which is often a great confidence booster for many patients.

Recovery and Aftercare: What to Expect After Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty Rhinoplasty is the surgical altering of the nose and can be done for cosmetic or functional purposes. This process is commonly known as a “nose job” and is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries available today.

Like with all surgical procedures, the recovery and aftercare process is one of the most essential parts. Let’s take a closer look at what to expect after rhinoplasty and some rhinoplasty recovery tips.

Rhinoplasty Post-Op

The rhinoplasty recovery will look different for each person. It all depends on what work was done during the rhinoplasty.

A rhinoplasty requiring more extensive altering of cartilage and bone tissue will likely have a longer recovery than a simpler procedure. After surgery, you’ll likely experience swelling, puffiness, nose aches, a dull headache, bruising, and light bleeding.

The most intensive part of rhinoplasty recovery is usually over within two days, and most patients return to work after a week. Patients that wear glasses will have to take extra care not to have the frames against their noses.

It is recommended that you wear contact lenses instead. If contact lenses aren’t an option, it is best to tape the glasses to your forehead or have the frames rest on your cheeks instead of your nose.

Aftercare Tips

Follow Your Surgeon’s Instructions

The best way to make your recovery faster and more comfortable is to follow your surgeon’s instructions. Your surgeon will send you home with instructions and resources to make sure your recovery process is as easy as possible.

Avoid Strenuous Activity

Your body is healing during this time and needs to refrain from strenuous activities like weight lifting, biking, and more. These activities are typically avoided for two to three weeks. However, your surgeon will assess your recovery process, and it’s important to be cleared by them before resuming any strenuous activities.

Avoid Blowing Your Nose

Your nose is healing during this time and should not be blown for up to several weeks. If you need to remove any mucus, gently wipe your nose with a soft tissue. This is to avoid damaging the sensitive tissue in your nose.

Taking the First Step

It is always best to be informed about what the recovery will look like for rhinoplasty. That’s why Dr. Ryan Frank beings every rhinoplasty with an in-depth consultation, where he will walk you through the entire process and discuss your cosmetic goals.

During this process, Dr. Frank will go over what every step of the recovery process will look like. If you’re considering rhinoplasty, contact Dr. Frank’s office in Calgary, AB, at 403-245-1228 today for a consultation.

Rhinoplasty: Achieving a Balanced Facial Profile with Nose Surgery

woman touching nose smile with clean and fresh skin Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, is a popular procedure to help you achieve a more balanced facial profile. Whether you’re unhappy with the size or shape of your nose or are dealing with breathing difficulties, rhinoplasty can help you feel more confident and comfortable in your skin.

As someone who has always been self-conscious about my nose, I can attest to rhinoplasty’s transformative power. The procedure has helped me achieve a more proportionate and symmetrical appearance, which has positively impacted my self-esteem. But, the procedure is not just about aesthetics; it can also help with breathing difficulties.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to reshape the nose. It enables you to change the nose’s size, shape, or angle and correct structural deformities. The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and can take one to three hours.

The procedure can be done in different ways, and there are two main types of rhinoplasty:

  • Open rhinoplasty: In this procedure, the surgeon makes a small incision on the columella, the strip of skin that separates the nostrils.
  • Closed rhinoplasty: In this procedure, the surgeon makes incisions inside the nostrils, avoiding visible scarring.

Recovering from Rhinoplasty

Recovery time can vary depending on the type of procedure and the individual patient. Some patients may experience swelling, bruising, and pain for a few days after the procedure, while others may experience more severe symptoms. Following your surgeon’s post-operative instructions and avoiding strenuous activity for the first few weeks after surgery is vital.

Results and Expectations

The final rhinoplasty results may take time to be visible. In most cases, it takes several weeks or even months for the swelling to subside and for the final shape of the nose to become apparent. It’s important to remember that rhinoplasty aims to achieve a natural-looking result rather than an unnatural or overdone appearance.

Why Should I Choose A Good Plastic Surgeon?

If you’re considering rhinoplasty, it’s important to research and chooses a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon. A good surgeon will take the time to understand your goals and concerns and will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan that meets your needs.

Nose Surgery Recovery Timeline

While very rewarding for our patients from Calgary and the surrounding areas, nose surgery involves a fairly difficult recovery. There’s no way around it due to the tissue trauma created by this surgery. Your eyes will probably blacken. You’ll have swelling come and go (usually in the evenings) for weeks. You’ll need some patience.

But all of that will be rewarded. Rhinoplasty is one of our most rewarding procedures, correcting features about their nose that our patients have hated their entire life.

Here’s a timeline of what you can expect after this procedure.

  • 1 week — Dr. Frank will remove your splint, and you can go out. But you’ll likely have some bruising that will need covering.
  • 2 weeks — Your bruising should have resolved, as should most of your swelling. But swelling will return at night at times.
  • 4 weeks — You can return to cardiovascular activities such as running, swimming, and cycling.
  • 6 weeks — Your bones should be stable by this point. You can put glasses back on, blow your nose lightly, and return to resistance/weight workouts.
  • 3-6 months — Any residual numbness and abnormal sensations in your nose and the nasal skin should be resolved.
  • 1 year -1.5 years — Healing is complete.

We know, that sounds like a long time, but this area of your face involves sensitive, thin tissues. You can speed your healing, to a degree, by doing some of these things:

  • Don’t rush it — Your body will let you know if you’re pushing things.
  • Keep your head elevated — You cannot sleep on your side. This will increase your bruising and swelling, and it can displace your repaired nose. You’ll need to sleep upright for 6 weeks. Use two pillows or a foam wedge.
  • Cold compresses — Use a cold compress for the first three days after your surgery, but don’t apply it to your nose. Apply it to your cheeks so that you don’t shift any bones or cartilage.
  • Get your rest — Rest is good for healing.
  • Eat good foods — Your body likes good foods, so lose the junk during your recovery…and beyond maybe.
  • Stay cool — Heat is not good for your recovery. Don’t take steamy showers.
  • Don’t get in a sauna — Don’t eat a bunch of hot soup. Heat increases your swelling.
  • Don’t blow your nose — You can’t blow your nose for 6 weeks. Try to use a saline nasal spray to gently moisturize your nasal passages until the swelling goes down.

Follow these tips and your recovery after rhinoplasty can beat the timelines listed above. If you’re interested in nose surgery, please call Dr. Frank at (403) 245-1228 to schedule a consultation.

A New Nose for a New Year

All of us have issues with our body or our appearance that we’re not happy with, but we can’t do much about. If you have narrow shoulders. If you’re shorter or taller than you’d like. If you have fair skin that gets hammered by the sun. Stuff like that.

But if you don’t like your nose, you have the ability to change it with Dr. Frank.

Nose surgery is clinically known as rhinoplasty and it can be used to change the shape or balance of your nose, or to improve its function.

Experienced with a long-performed procedure

Rhinoplasty was one of the original cosmetic procedures. The first closed rhinoplasty was performed in 1887 by an American ENT surgeon named Dr. John Orlando Roe. It’s hard to find statistics for our first Canadian nose surgery, but it probably was not long afterwards. Since those bygone days, improvements in surgical technology have made this procedure even better for changing the shape and size of the nose, or for repairing or correcting any deformities that disrupt normal function of the nasal pathway.

But nose surgery isn’t something to be taken lightly. The surgery is very complex and Dr. Frank has extensive experience with these procedures. His Fellowship of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons status attests to his training and expertise.

Nose surgery removes, rearranges, or reshapes the bone or cartilage of the nose to correct irregularities. As one of the main focal points of the face, the nose has a big impact on how people see themselves.

Deciding on your new nose

During your consultation with Dr. Frank, you will discuss how you want to change your nose. The more specific and realistic your expectations the better, and this should include some research on your part.

The procedure

Due to the length of the surgery, general anesthesia is used for Dr. Frank’s nose surgeries. He uses an “open” approach for procedures where more change is the goal. This is the method where the incisions are created across the tissue between the patient’s nostrils. It allows more significant changes to things such as overall nose size. If the goal is to reduce the nose size or shape, or to straighten it, the skin covering the underlying bone and cartilage will be separated, allowing the cartilage and bone to be reshaped. Once this has been done, the skin is then re-draped over the surface. Flared nostrils can be narrowed by creating an incision at the junction between the nose and the skin of the upper lip.

If the situation is right, Dr. Frank uses the “closed” method where all incisions are made within the nose itself. This method is used when smaller refinements are needed. It’s not right for more dramatic changes in the nose shape.

Life’s too short to live with a nose you hate seeing in the mirror every morning. Call Dr. Frank at (403) 245-1228 and schedule a consultation for rhinoplasty.

A Nose for Change

Rhinoplasty Calgary, AB CanadaAfter the eyes, the nose is the defining feature of the face. People tend not to notice it if everything is even and balanced, but they really notice things such as a bulbous tip, a knob on the bridge, or an unsymmetrical shape. And people who have a nose that they aren’t happy with see it looking back at them every morning in the mirror.

Why put up with that? Get that nose you’d like to have with nose surgery from Dr. Frank. Dr. Frank customizes your reshaping surgery to complement your features, and he has a long list of happy Calgary patients who’ve benefitted from his surgical expertise.

Should you have nose surgery?

Really, anyone unhappy with his or her nose is a good candidate for nose surgery, known as rhinoplasty. Whether it is congenital or the result of an injury makes no difference. Here are some things to consider.

  • Your nose appears too large compared to your face
  • When viewed in profile, there is a bump on the bridge
  • The tip of your nose droops or is enlarged
  • Your nostrils are overly flared

The surgery

Prior to even deciding on surgery, you will consult with Dr. Frank about your potential nose surgery.

The actual surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Dr. Frank matches the method used to the patient. In open rhinoplasty, the incision is made across the columella, the tissue between the nostrils. All the skin and cartilage are then lifted up off the underlying structure. In closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made within the nose. The skin is lifted off of the underlying bone and cartilage, which is then shaped and sculpted. With either method, once the changes are complete, Dr. Frank redrapes the skin and the nose is taped with steristrips and covered with a molded plastic splint to provide support.

Recovery

Recovery is not fast with nose surgery. You’ll need to lay low for a full week, with your splint in place on your nose. In this time, your bruising should run its course. Over the next six weeks, your swelling should decrease up to 80%, but you must be patient.

If you’d like to get a nose you like seeing every morning in the mirror, please call Dr. Frank at (403) 245-1228 to set up a consultation for rhinoplasty.

A Primer on Everything Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty Calgary, CAIt’s easy to think that today’s aesthetic surgeries are new, reliant on technology, and in some cases such as endoscopic brow lifts that is true. But other procedures have been around for a long time. Rhinoplasty is one of those.

The first recorded nose-enhancement surgery can be traced back to ancient times in Egypt and India. Fast forward to 2018, nose surgery, clinically known as rhinoplasty, is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgeries. Some patients want to aesthetically improve the appearance of their nose while others want to correct deformities brought about by trauma.

Dr. Frank has been helping Calgary patients like the nose they see every morning when they look in the mirror. Nose surgery is a very satisfying procedure.

What’s involved?

Whatever your reasons for wanting rhinoplasty, below is a run-through of everything involved with the procedure:

  • Rhinoplasty with Dr. Frank is more than just about altering the size and shape of your nose. Dr. Frank will consider all of these factors — your overall facial balance, nasal support, skin elasticity, ethnicity, and medical history.
  • A good cosmetic outcome from rhinoplasty is not solely dependent on the skills of your surgeon but also the patient’s healing response, which may be influenced by the state of his or her health and lifestyle habits such as smoking.
  • Rhinoplasty can be performed via the open or closed approach. In an open rhinoplasty, the nasal cartilage and surrounding bone structure are exposed, while a closed approach keeps them untouched and unexposed because the incisions are made inside the nose.
  • It’s not uncommon to be disappointed with the appearance of your nose following surgery. The significant amount of swelling post-surgery will be unappealing. You need patience at this time.

Whether it’s a droopy nasal tip or a variety humps and bumps that are bothering you, we’d love to help you review your nose-enhancement options. Call Dr. Frank at (403) 245-1228 to make a consultation for rhinoplasty.

What to Do After Your Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty CalgaryWhether your nose surgery was for cosmetic or functional reasons, the goal is to recover as soon as possible without complications. Dr. Frank knows that a successful recovery is a critical component of your overall rhinoplasty experience. Patients want to see their final results as soon as possible, but patience is a virtue, especially with rhinoplasty recovery!

Your initial recovery will take two weeks or more, although you will have some residual swelling for a few weeks. This swelling can come and go for a few months, especially in the evening. Here are some tips for a successful, speedy recovery from this rewarding cosmetic procedure with Dr. Frank:

  • Limit facial muscle movements— This sounds obvious, but during your recovery you need to limit things such as laughing and smiling (only hang out with your more boring friends!). Be careful not to open your mouth too wide. Keep your nose from stretching too much or from being hit. Opt for food that is easy to chew; postpone having foods like steak that require more chewing.
  • Protect your nose from the sun— Unprotected sun exposure can cause permanent discoloration in your nose after rhinoplasty. Apply 30+ spf sunscreen and wear protective clothing. You don’t want “a little sun,” your nose doesn’t want any. This seems easy if you have your procedure during a Calgary winter, but even if you’re up skiing protect your nose with sunscreen.
  • Choose the right clothes— During recovery, choose clothes that won’t possibly have physical contact with the nose area. Also, don’t wear sunglasses or reading glasses. If you need regular glasses tape them above your bridge. Avoid tops that must be pulled over your head, such as sweaters, t-shirts, or that Flames’ jersey. Button-up shirts are your best choice as you recover, as they minimize nose movement and possible bumping while dressing.
  • Keep the exercise light— You may be tempted to get back to hardcore exercise soon as a way to help deal with recovery, but you can’t. You need to opt for lighter workouts that restrict up-and-down movement. Also, don’t participate in sports that put you at risk of hitting your nose. Lastly, your nose will feel tender during recovery, which makes swimming, diving, and similar exercise a temporary no-no until you’re fully healed.

With patience and attention, gracefully recovering from rhinoplasty is not difficult. Dr. Frank will explain the best practices for your recovery, so that you will be pleased with your new nose for the rest of your life. Call us at (403) 245-1228 to schedule a consultation or with any questions you may have.

Thinking about Rhinoplasty? Here’s What you Need to Know!

rhinoplastyIf you’re unhappy with the size, shape, profile, or other characteristics of your nose, chances are you may have considered rhinoplasty. As you move toward your most confident decision, here are some details you want to know.

  • One of your most important decisions about rhinoplasty is choosing your surgeon. Technique is vital to an optimal outcome.
  • An experienced surgeon is one part of the whole. The end-result of rhinoplasty can also be affected by your genes! If cartilage and skin are weak, these factors can diminish what the most skilled surgeon can achieve.
  • Your nose is your nose. Yes, it’s good to have an idea, or even images, of noses you admire. However, your surgeon should take into account how your “ideal” would actually look on your face.
  • The intent of your experienced plastic surgeon is to create a nose that is at home on your face so the whole is enhanced.
  • The architecture of the nose can only be modified so much. Reshaping is a meticulous process that involves cartilage more often than skeletal structure.
  • Cartilage manipulation and removal also needs to be somewhat limited. Removing too much will affect the structural integrity of the whole, and may create a deformity. Ideally, skeletal support will be sustained or even reinforced. by proper shaping.
  • It is nearly impossible to achieve perfection with even the most painstaking rhinoplasty procedure. Insisting on this could lead to a great deal of disappointment.
  • In some cases, a minor revision surgery can be performed to put the finishing touches on a previous rhinoplasty. However, this is typically only done to improve breathing capabilities or shape. Rhinoplasty revisions are considerably more complex than the initial procedure, which is why it is vital to choose your surgeon with the utmost care.
  • Generally speaking, a young patient with firm cartilage, good health, and resilient skin should be able to achieve the desired outcome from rhinoplasty.
  • The final result from rhinoplasty can take months to fully appear. Expecting this can give you the patience you need to feel the most satisfied with your process.

Modern surgical techniques and the right structural and genetic makeup can add up to a beautiful rhinoplasty experience. To learn more about this procedure, call (403) 245-1228.
